Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration (with wireless connectivity).The warning beeps from various systems are also loud and intrusive, to the point where they feel more like an annoyance than a welcome assist. Lane keeping assistance can be a bit twitchy, and on its medium or strong settings you sometimes feel like you're fighting the car to drive in a straight line. The wireless connectivity for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration works smoothly too. On the upside, the configurable home screen is particularly useful in this car, to save you digging through menus for your commonly used commands. A lot of controls were buried multiple touches deep, and the voice commands haven't expanded their functionality to compensate. (We even encountered the occasional loading screen.) It was also saddled with an interface that's not the easiest to learn or navigate. How’s the tech? Our test vehicle's 10.1-inch touchscreen was impressively large and sharp, but at the same time it could be laggy and unresponsive. The optional surround-view camera helps a lot. Visibility is subpar because the thick pillars, high beltline and square hood make it more difficult than it should be to judge the position of such a relatively small vehicle. Some controls are only accessible through the touchscreen, which can be frustrating, and the driver information interface has a somewhat convoluted menu structure. The driver aid controls are next to the infotainment screen, for instance, and the infotainment controls are farther down on the center stack, mixed in with the climate controls. The placement of the different controls can be plain confusing. Getting in and out can also be problematic because of the squattish nature of the door openings.Īnother issue is that the Compass doesn't really make driving easy. There's also lots of rear legroom, though rear headroom is lackluster. Front passengers get generous headroom and legroom. How’s the interior? We like that the Compass is roomier than many smaller subcompact SUVs. ![]()
